PREVIEW v Headingley AFC

6 Oct 2016 by Peter Arnett

Athletic Still Looking For First League Win.

Wetherby go into their 10th league match of the season, still looking for their first win this weekend as they host Headingley FC at The Ings. The match has a 2:30pm kick-off time and a look at the weather shows a cloudy day is in store!

It is almost five months since we last recorded a league win, and Manager Mark Forster is hoping that last weekend’s 3-1 win over AFC Crossleys will be the catalyst that his team need in order to start picking up the points.

The gaffer is also hoping to be able to field a stronger team this week, as several players are back from injury and there may even be a new signing included in the starting eleven!

Our visitors are currently in 8th position in the league having won five of the eleven games that they have played. On the road, they have amassed two wins and three defeats and in the process have scored seven times (averaging 1.4 goals per game) whilst conceding on fourteen occasions (averaging 2.8 goals per game).

A win for Wetherby would see us hopefully close the gap on Oxenhope Recreation who, at present, have a four point lead over us. A defeat could see this margin further widened, if they manage to get a result against Ilkley Town.

A look through the Wetherby Athletic Database shows at least two meetings between the teams. These occurred in the 2009-2010 season and saw Wetherby victories on both occasions. At The Ings, we were 3-2 winners with goals from Jonathan Dockerty and a brace from Almonzo Hamilton.

Wetherby will be without the services of John Tehrani, as the midfielder begins his suspension following the sending off against Brighouse Old Boys a couple of weeks ago. Our visitors have no suspension worries coming into this game.

Taking charge of this game will be Mr David Holmes. Mr Holmes will be assisted by Mr John Murray and Mr Andrew Gawthorpe. We hope that the officials have a pleasant time whilst they are at The Ings.

Please come down and cheer the lads on, the Wetherby Sports Association bar will be open and serving a wide range of beverages for your enjoyment both before and after the match.

Please also keep checking back as our online matchday programme “Tangerine Tales” will be available within the next couple of days.
