Tough Match Sees Wetherby Knocked Out Of Cup.

This week was a tough one, with Wetherby taking on Tingley Athletic at home on the Ings in the League Cup. Tingley are riding high in third place in the league above the Tangerines, but Wetherby were feeling positive after a great game last week.

Wetherby started well, with a lot of pressure on the visitors defence and had a couple of early shots stopped by their keeper.

Unfortunately, against the run of play, a mix up at the back allowed Tingley to take the lead as their quick striker nicked the ball from a pass across the back four to take on Jane Potter in goal. 1-0 to Tingley.

Despite more pressure, and some excellent passing and moving from Wetherby, they just could not convert this pressure into goals at the other end. Tingley however, made the most of only their second attack to double their lead in the 35th minute.

Wetherby went in at halftime with heads down, not feeling like they deserved to be 2-0 down, but came out stronger. The first ten minutes of the second half were an orange whitewash, with Wetherby reducing the deficit when Holly Fowler did exceptionally well to retain the ball as she drove into the opposition box, and finished expertly at a narrow angle.

Wetherby had a few chances to level early on in this half, with Holly Fowler, Rachel Carmichael and Jane Kemshall going close. It wasn’t to be however, and Tingley managed to increase their lead with 20 minutes to go, as they took advantage of their speed on the wings and a lovely through ball left a one-on-one with the keeper which they capitalised on. This started a bright spell from Tingley, where they pressured the Wetherby defence more and more, and managed to score another after a long ball over the top.

Tingle’s fifth came after a very poor decision by the referee led to a penalty. The Tingley striker was through on goal and a slide tackle from Jemma Carmody took the ball cleanly, but the referee reacted to the player collision afterwards (and the scream and roll!) and awarded a penalty which they converted.

There were many positives to take from the game, and as Manager Danny Redshaw stated: “We played some of the best football we’ve played all season, and there are only a few little things missing at the minute. We have some great build up play and just need to work on that final push, and keep building the confidence we have. Attitudes are great, and everyone is willing to learn and move on, which is really good. League game next week, and a great opportunity for another 3 points on the board.”

Wetherby Player of the match went to Jane Potter, who volunteered to take the keeper role after WALFC’s usual keeper was kept out due to injury.

Also, great to see another debutant for Wetherby this season, in 17 year old Abbie Sayers.
